1984 Ross Mt. Whitney:

As the mountain bike market exploded, manufacturers started something of a "price war".  Since there wasn't a huge difference in the imported bikes, price became a deciding factor for the consumers.  Ross always seemed to offer nice components for a reasonable price.  They also sponsored the Ross Indians which was one of the first good sized factory teams.  Chrome always made sense for the abuse that the mountain bikes would be subjected to and Ross offered many of their models with a chrome finish.
