Jeff Archer:  I started working with bikes in the lateJeff 1970's by buying up used bikes, refurbishing them and selling them out of the front yard.   When I attended college at The Ohio State University, I put my backyard skills to use wrenching at a local shop.  By the time I graduated, I had worked up to being the store manager.  I decided that owning a bike shop was more exciting than computer engineering so I moved south to open my own shop.  First Flight Bicycles was born and I have been at it ever since.  For a complete history (and embarrassing photos) check out our history page.

Over the span of about a dozen years, Jeff helped complete the 30.5 miles of the Itusi Trail at Lake Norman State Park.  This included writing approximately $135,000 in grants (Lowes, Duke Energy, RTP, REI) as well as organizing trail work days and running the email group.

Jeff also joined the board of the Downtown Statesville Development Corporation (DSDC) to help promote downtown and was elected Chairman in 2013.

Wes Davidson:  Wes received a Trek 820 from Santa wayWes Jet 16 back in 1995.   Two years after that, he was in looking for a job.  It started out as just a couple of days after school and by graduation in 1999, he was working 30 hours a week.  After graduation, he picked up full time hours.  While working at the shop, he found time to pick up Associates Degree in Computer Programming from MIT (Mitchell In-Town for you non-locals).  Wes has picked up a great love for the vintage mountain bikes, some of them made before he was born!

Wes is heading up the trail building effort at the new Bigleaf Slopes Park with Iredell County.  This should result in a 4-5 mile mountain bike trail that will eventually tie into the Carolina Thread Trail.  Keep up with the progress on the Bigleaf Slopes Park page

Jonathan Dickerson (AKA: Gilligan, alumnus):  Jonathan is the latest victim in our string of high school employees, starting in spring of 2008.  We usually get them for a year or two before moving on to attend college.  We have been teaching him the finer points of taking out the trash (oh yeah, and building bikes too!)  Hopefully, we'll get to hang on to him a little longer.   Looks like we'll lose Gilligan to Appalachian State University in the fall of '09.

Brad Walton (First Flight alumnus):  BradBrad Walton joined First Flight while attending high school and started working just in time to help move the store into its new location in 1995.  He was responsible for many of the 13 gallons of paint applied to the 14' ceiling while standing on a step ladder.   Brad was usually the first to try out the new gadgets and started getting into the "big hit" bikes before he left us in mid 1999.  He later went on to form his own bike clothing company, Spectrum Techwear.  If you ever run into Brad, make sure to ask him about building pirate trails in the Pisgah National Forest!

Pony Boy:  Pony BoyNamed for the main character from the book The Outsiders .   Pony is officially a level 3(20-36%) Labrador Retriever,  level 4(10-19%) Boston Terrier, Golden Retriever, Keeshond and Maltese  plus a level 5(less than 10%) Australian Shepard and Weimaraner.........but we prefer "mutt".    Pony is in charge of greeting customers and entertaining small children while their parents shop.

Who works on your bike?

When your buy or new bike, or bring your current bike in for repair, do you know who works on it?  Have they been there for a week?  Do they know how to rebuild your Sturmey-Archer hub (or even know what it is)? At First Flight Bikes, you know who works on your bike: myself or Wes.  Between the two of us, we have over 40 years of bike experience between us.
