Back at the 1981 bike trade show, Specialized introduced the 1982 Stumpjumper.  It has been generally recognized as the first production mountain bike.  The story is, Mike Sinyard (owner of Specialized) ordered three Ritchey built mountain bikes (one in each size) and sent them over to Japan to be copied.  They still used similar parts to the high end bikes (Suntour Mighty shifters, TA cranks, Mafac brakes, KKT pedals...) but came in at about $750.  This is when a custom built bike would go for at least double that amount.  They were ordered from Japan in batches and it appears like some of the specs changed on the fly.  What we are trying to do is to document some of these changes and get an idea of how many bikes were made.  Below is a chart with some serial numbers and important spec changes.  If you have any info to add, please let us know.
